How do we protect our crops and our sector's image?

Entrepreneurship over the years
Floor Tesselaar has owned Top Orchid with her brother Joost since 2020. Grandpa Willem founded the company in 1947. Father Peter, still part of the company, initiated a major sustainability and innovation drive some 15 years ago. In addition to her work for Top Orchid, Floor is president of the FPC pot orchid and a member of the Youth Council.

A future where our members not only deliver great products, but also contribute to a healthy, greener world. Based on this conviction, we created the Royal FloraHolland Sustainability Award.

The Sustainability Award is not just any award. It is the annual platform where members of our cooperative are challenged and inspired to share their innovative, sustainable ideas and initiatives. The award recognises, rewards and encourages growers who contribute with vision and vigour to a future-proof floriculture sector.

With the Sustainability Award, we show how together we take responsibility for our planet, our community and the quality of our operations. Growing Greener Together, that's the idea. Be it smart water saving, eco-friendly packaging, fair working conditions, better business practices or technological innovations. Every sustainable initiative counts.

How does it work?

You can submit your initiative until the 31th of August. This initiative may be on the market or in use for a maximum of one year. An independent expert jury will then assess all entries on sustainability (ESG), impact and feasibility. The five most promising initiatives will be selected and may present their idea in person to the jury. Videos are also being made to give the innovation extra exposure. The public vote will follow in October: all Royal FloraHolland members can then vote for their favourite initiative and help determine who wins. The public vote counts for 30% of the score. During the festive award ceremony at the annual Trade Fair Aalsmeer in November, we will put the nominees in the spotlight in detail and announce the winners.

What can you win?

As well as a prestigious physical trophy, numbers 1, 2 and 3 will receive practical support to further develop the sustainable initiative. The winner will also be visited by the expert jury for personal advice and will be promoted as an ambassador for sustainability within and outside our industry. For example, prizes can be used:

• Gold - production of a brand video & campaign advice

• Silver - strategic session with marketing advice

• Bronze - elaboration of a creative (campaign) concept

Greenovation becomes Sustainability Award

The Royal FloraHolland Sustainability Award is the successor to the Greenovation Award. But what actually makes this new award different? We list the biggest differences.

Exclusive award for members

The new Sustainability Award is more focused and exclusive: only member growers can apply directly. Suppliers and other external parties are still welcome, but only in conjunction with a member. In the past, for example, the Greenovation Award was open to both growers and packaging suppliers.

Diversity in applications

At the Sustainability Award, we look at sustainability across the board (ESG). Besides environmental aspects (Environmental), we also pay attention to social innovations (Social) and technological innovation or responsible governance (Governance). Think about initiatives around fair working conditions, new technologies or improved transparency. Thus, the new award better fits our integral sustainability ambition: Growing Greener Together.The original Greenovation Award focused on environmental aspects such as packaging and recycling.
